Choosing the perfect photographer for your big day can feel stressful. Trying to find a supplier that you get along with, that suits your budget and fits the vibe of your day can feel impossible, but don’t panic; there is a supplier out there for everyone!
Once you’ve chosen your venue, start looking for your photographer right away. Especially if you’re planning a summer wedding, as photographers can get booked up years in advance.
If you’re not sure where to start, when I got engaged, I looked through wedding magazines, websites and Instagram to narrow down our list to five potentials. We emailed all of them and asked for their brochures and price lists. Once they’d all responded, we looked through the images and decided on the style that we liked (the fun part) and how much we wanted to spend (the not-so-fun part). We organised video chats with two of them and felt an instant connection with the photographer who was recommended to us by a friend. He was lovely and put us both at ease right away, so we decided to hire him.
If you’re feeling nervous in front of the camera, I recommend organising a pre-wedding shoot. We decided to book one, and although we were very nervous, I’m so glad we did it. It’s a great way to get to know your photographer and see how they work before the wedding day. Plus, you’ll come away with some beautiful images that you can use on your big day stationery.
To help you find a photographer, we’ve put together a feature introducing some of the region’s best suppliers.
Happy planning!

Retreat East
Set within a tranquil wellness retreat in the heart of Suffolk, Retreat East offers a taste of wedding heaven. Designed by owner and architect Dominic Richards, the beautifully restored dairy farm includes an original 16th-century farmhouse and 16 stylishly converted barns with beamed ceilings, freestanding bathtubs and a country chic vibe – perfect for pre- or post-wedding rest and relaxation.
Surrounded by 35 acres of countryside and wildflower meadows, it’s a quintessentially English setting. Whether you’re looking for an exclusive use wedding or a smaller, more intimate affair, you can enjoy a tailor made experience for your special day.
Nestled in its own private walled garden, The Farmhouse is licensed for ceremonies and oozes character and charm, or you can tie the knot in the oak-framed Great Barn, ideal for larger gatherings; it can host up to 150 guests and is the perfect place to continue your celebrations. There’s a bar area next to it where family and friends can mix and mingle and a terrace to relax and unwind, cocktail in hand.
You can spend the night before your wedding at The Inglenook, complete with a free-standing bar and festoon lighting. You can toast marshmallows by the fire, sip mulled wine and dance the night away.
